You hear and see it everywhere #SelfCare is here to stay. But you might be wondering what are the benefits of self-care. And most importantly why should you care about taking care of yourself when you have work, kids, a spouse, and a thousand other things to take care of.

Well, I hope you take the time to read through this article and learn about all the benefits of self-care that are just waiting for you.

Self-Care Definition

According to Oxford Languages, self-care is the practice of taking action to preserve or improve one’s own health.

I agree with that definition but let’s break down the different types of self-care needed for overall health and wellness.

Types of Self-Care

My main pillars of self-care are the following.

  • Physical Self-Care: what I’m eating, supplements, skin-care, and physical activity.
  • Mental health: practicing gratitude, journaling, taking mental breaks, having ME time.)
  • Emotional health: acknowledging my feelings good and bad, and expressing them in a healthy and productive way.
  • Spiritual Self-Care: Connecting to nature, prayer, and self-reflecting.
  • Social Self-Care: Does not mean being on social media but rather taking a break from it to connect with family and friends in real life.
  • Practical Self-Care: Decluttering if my home is cluttered so is my brain.

Those are just some examples of what I do to Self-Care in each category.

Why I Prioritize Self-Care & You Should Too!

I started thinking about self-care more seriously a few years ago. But I didn’t really start prioritizing it until after I got married. To see my wedding blog post click here.

The wedding planning process was really stressful for me as I’m sure it’s been for many of you.

So I have to say that post-wedding blues is real! During the planning process, I stopped doing the things that brought me joy and clarity. I wasn’t journaling, I stopped blogging. I was only working out to look good in my dress not to FEEL good and healthy.

So naturally, after the wedding, I felt completely lost.

The moment I started journaling again, I started getting clarity. The more I started doing the things I list above the happier I was. It didn’t happen overnight. But that’s why it’s so important to practice self-care daily.
